Normalcy may be returning to life as things are starting to get accomplished and good things are happening in life. Or maybe things have just come to a must and therefore are being accomplished. Either way it feels good to see things coming off the list and working.

September 21, 2010: New replacement Samsung Solstice Arrives
During Thanksgiving break of 2009, I finally upgraded my phone and got the Samsung Solstice touchscreen phone. By at least June, the touchscreen was not working properly. By August, the whole left bottom corner was not working properly. Every time you hit the corner the resulting action was whatever was to right of the tap. I could no longer dial any numbers that were not already in the contacts. Resulting in actually having to pull out the old Razr until the new phone arrived.
September 11, 2010: New Tires on the Car (Definitely a Necessity see previous post)
The car has received it's fourth set of tires over 7.5 years of life. The last set just couldn't make it through the last two autocross events of the 2010 Season. The new tires may get broken in this weekend in Lexington at Applebees if interested in checking it out.
Health Update:
Though I have not been walking daily nor eating the most healthiest meals, it apparently is not all bad as my cholesterol results came in today and overall cholesterol was down 49 pts, LDL 62 pts, ration 2.4. Now HDL was also down 8 not a good thing and Triglycerides up 104. Triglycerides is probably due to the fried and sugary foods that I have been eating in excess. Not sure the status of the weight, since I do not have my usual scale nor a scale at all. I was disappointed to only be down about 6 lbs since I saw the same doctor in Louisville about 4.5 years ago.
Now off to the next set of adventures and accomplishments in life. Hope to see you on the way.

Fried Computer ... Now What
The computer has gone down in flames, not literally but figuratively. The hard drive has now crashed and data has been lost. Therefore with a dead ethernet card, power supply, and harddrive, I suppose this machine that is approximately 9 years old has seen its last day of life.
The question now is what to do in purchasing a new machine.
- Vista, XP, or some how wait until Windows 7 comes out
- Desktop or Laptop
- Leaning towards desktop but then do I go for brand name or more my own design.
- What is a reputable place to purchase a pc from?
Any suggestions or thoughts on purchasing a new pc would be appreciated?

Computer Woes....
About 3 weeks ago things started to go downhill with the computer. It all started with a really bad thunderstorm. Lightning either hit the building I live in or hit very close to it.
Personally, my computer's network card was blown. Additionally, I am fairly positive that the strike turned the computer on as the green and orange light was on though the screen was totally black. I had to hard reboot the machine. The computer came back up seemingly with no problems except for the network card.
The building had issues with the card entry system and the fire panel. The office computer's motherboard was fried and a student's laptop power supply was zapped. Those are the issues I heard about prior to leaving two days later.
Upon departure for two week vacation, I unplugged all of my large items like tv and computer.
Upon return, I plugged the surge protector back into the wall. It immediately sent an electric current through the surge protector to the computer, which made a large popping noise. After that, there was no longer power being received by the computer. The monitor, printer, and phone were all still working.
Thankfully it appears that the only thing that was blown was the power supply and of course the network card still does not work. I borrowed a power supply from IT to checkout the status of the computer.
QUESTION: Any suggestions on where or brand of power supply to purchase? Is there anything in particular that I should look for in a power supply? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

External Hard Drive
Okay, I have one week plus a couple days before I have to move out of my apartment and I really need to back up my computer before I start hauling it around to who knows where. My question for you is what would you suggest in terms of purchasing a hard drive: brand, space for money, where you usually find the best deal, anything else that may be important in this decision. Unfortunately, purchasing something off the internet is probably not going to work since I have only a week, but suggest away.

Internet Woes by Microsoft
Order of events:
A little before 11:30 pm on Wednesday, I shut down my computer and it asks to download the latest updates. As Chris and probably both of them though only one of them has stated such, I have become a lazy IT person who just accepts the updates and goes on with life. I use to check them out but that stopped at least a year ago.
Just before midnight, there was a power surge and all the power went out in the apartment for at least a minute.
I reset the cable/internet box and all was well with the TV. I didn’t check the internet because all seemed okay.
Thursday morning, I woke and tried to get on the internet. I tried both my ATT U-verse and the dial-up connection. Though both were connecting to the internet, none of the applications were working to access the internet. I tried some debugging with the help of a friend but didn’t get anywhere. It became weirder when Pauline also could not access the internet from her computer, which uses Comcast Internet. The question now was why neither of us could get on the internet with three different connection types. We were both unfortunately stuck on the whole power outage scenario and I didn’t really think about the fact that she too may have downloaded the latest Microsoft updates.
So Pauline and I headed to the library to get some work done. My brain was fried apparently or maybe I have been out of IT too long to remember where to go to find such issues. Then again had I been thinking that it was an update issue instead of a network type issue, maybe I would have checked out Microsoft or one of the numerous other IT websites out there.
Upon returning that night, our internet still did not work so I called ATT to see what they could tell me. Sure enough the issue was the Microsoft Updates. They could even tell me which update was the culprit KB951748. But their solution from Microsoft made no sense. It was to delete cookies, files, and history from IE and set IE back to all its defaults. Not sure how that would resolve the larger issue of all of my applications not wanting to interact with the internet, though I could successfully ping external websites. It did not solve the issue and she suggested that I would have to talk to Microsoft or the computer company. That wasn’t going to happen.
So it was off to the next best solution, who do I know that surely has heard of the issue by now and could assist me. So I got a hold of Chris and he checked out the latest and greatest on the particular security update. It definitely was the culprit because the update and Zone Alarm apparently don’t play nicely together. Solutions shutdown Zone Alarm, uninstall the patch, or hardcode the DNS into Zone Alarm. Not hip on the disable of Zone Alarm and too tired to try to figure out the hardcoding, I just went with the uninstall of the update and miraculously everything was working again and that is the lovely internet saga for Thursday.

Computer Woes Again :-(
Any suggestions on what might be the problem:
The keyboard has been continuously deciding it does not want to work anymore. Then all of a sudden it starts working to just five minutes later stop again. Then I finally got it working but it was in a permanent state of Shift key down. Numbers were symbols and the number pad wouldn't work at all. I rebooted the machine and the keyboard refused to work. I have since opened up the computer and tried to remove as much of the dust that I possibly can. Currently, it is working but that does not mean a whole lot. Seems similar to problems from almost 2 years ago though currently it is only the keyboard acting up.
Any assistance is appreciated.
